Three ways to fit a wide shot

Crop fills the vertical frame and cuts the sides. Blur and Fit keep the whole picture. Smart reframe makes the crop follow the speaker.

Convert a video to vertical

Your format choice applies to every clip you export, so a whole batch comes out the same shape.

  1. Upload a wide video

MP4, MOV, MKV or WebM, recorded in 16:9.

  2. Choose a format and fit

9:16, 4:5 or 1:1, then Crop, Blur or Fit. Turn on smart reframe to follow the speaker.

  3. Export

Captions are added after the reframe, so they always sit inside the new frame.

Crop, Blur or Fit: which to use

  • Crop fills the frame from the centre and cuts off the sides. Best for one person talking to camera, especially with smart reframe on.
  • Blur places the whole wide frame over a blurred, enlarged copy of itself. Best when the sides matter, such as two people or a screen share.
  • Fit shows the whole frame with black bars above and below. The plainest option, good for slides and screen recordings.

Smart reframe follows faces

With smart reframe on, VisionSnip finds the faces through the clip and pans the crop to follow them, smoothed so it doesn't jitter. One face stays centred. Two faces stay in frame together when they're close enough to fit; when they're too far apart, it follows the larger, usually closer, face. When nobody is in view, it holds its last position.

Which format for which platform

  • 9:16: TikTok, Instagram Reels, YouTube Shorts and Stories
  • 4:5: portrait posts in the Instagram and Facebook feeds
  • 1:1: square feed posts
  • 16:9: YouTube, and anywhere the original shape works

Questions

Does smart reframe work with two people?

Yes, when they're close enough to fit in the vertical frame. If they're far apart, it follows the larger face; choose Blur to keep both in view.

What happens when nobody is on screen?

The crop holds where it was, or starts in the centre if no face has appeared yet.

Will the captions get cut off?

No. Captions are drawn after the video is reframed, so they always fit the new frame.

Is it free?

Yes. Every format, fit mode and smart reframe are on every plan, including Free.

Can I keep the original 16:9?

Yes. Export at 16:9 to keep the original shape, with captions added.
